The ZEW business sentiment index in Germany fell by 5.4 points in the January survey to 10.3, below expectations of 15.2. The deterioration in the index in January came despite the current economic situation assessment remaining unchanged, while the expectations index rose by 2.7 points to 90.4.
In contrast, the index for the eurozone rose to 18.0 compared to 17.0 in the December reading, while expectations were for growth of 16.9.
The current situation assessment remained stable, while the expectations index improved by 1.2 points above the December reading.
