Preliminary estimates from the UK Office for National Statistics showed that UK GDP fell by 0.3% in April, compared to a 0.2% growth in March, below expectations of a 0.1% decline.
This reading is expected to see the UK economy grow by 0.7% in the three months to April.
The services sector, which accounts for more than 70% of the UK economy, recorded a 0.4% decline in April, compared to a 0.4% growth in March, making it the largest contributor to the decline in GDP in April.
